Q&A

What is a clean sheet in football and why does it matter?

A clean sheet in football happens when a team prevents the opposing side from scoring any goals during an entire match. If a goalkeeper and their defenders stop the opponent from finding the back of the net for ninety minutes, they have earned a clean sheet.

This defensive achievement matters greatly for several reasons. First, it guarantees that the team cannot lose the match; at worst, they will secure a draw if they also fail to score. Second, it shows strong defensive organization, tactical discipline and concentration from the backline and the goalkeeper.

Teams that regularly keep clean sheets often build successful campaigns. Football is a low-scoring sport, so stopping the opponent makes winning much easier with just a single goal at the other end. Coaches value clean sheets as the foundation of a stable team. The Tacticus app shows form, head-to-head and goal timing for each analysed match to help you understand how often teams keep clean sheets.
