Q&A

What is a back three in football tactics?

A back three is a defensive formation where a team uses three central defenders instead of the traditional two. This setup gives a team more passing options when building attacks from the back while maintaining central defensive cover.

In possession, the two outer central defenders often push wider to help create space, while the central defender acts as the anchor. Wing-backs usually play alongside the back three, dropping deep to form a back five when defending and pushing forward to support the attack on the flanks.

While this system offers good control of central areas, it requires high fitness levels from the wide players and quick communication between the defenders to cover open spaces. Football matches are complex and formations change constantly during play.
